The aim of the GMO-TA project is to develop a technology assessment (TA) framework that can be used by competent authorities in specific GMO authorisation cases. The purpose of the framework will be to make available to decision makers knowledge that is relevant in the political evaluation but that goes beyond statutory risk assessment requirements. Such knowledge may, for example, concern impacts that occur elsewhere (i.e., in the country where an imported GMO is cultivated), that require closer ecological investigation, or go beyond the health and environment categories.
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
