Professor Kaare M. Nielsen is Professor and Head of the Department of life sciences and health, Oslo and Akershus University College. Previously professor at the Department of Pharmacy, the University of Tromsø, Norway (2001-2014). Nielsen holds a PhD in Biology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, and has completed postdoctoral studies in Germany (BBA), The Netherlands (IPO-DLO), and the USA (Harvard University). Sabbatical stay at Yale University in 2011.

Nielsen is attached to GenØk as an adviser. Nielsen’s research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanism behind, and the ecological effects and evolutionary impacts of horizontal transfer of genes in various organisms. The research strategy includes both theoretical and experimental approaches.

Nielsen is an expert member of the GMO panels of the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) (Oslo, Norway) since 2007 and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (Parma, Italy) (2009-15). He was a member of the EFSA Scientific Committee working group on scientific uncertainty.
